In The Villages® and many surrounding Florida communities, short-term rentals have become the latest trend for homeowners looking to earn some extra income. Platforms like Airbnb and VRBO have opened the door for residents to turn their homes into mini vacation spots — and who can blame them? It’s a tempting way to make a return on investment while keeping the property in use.
But as with many things, there’s another side to the story.
When our neighborhoods become revolving doors for short-term guests, the familiar rhythm of our community begins to shift. The friendly wave from a neighbor you’ve known for years can easily turn into a cautious glance toward a stranger unloading luggage for a three-day stay. While most renters are respectful visitors who enjoy our beautiful surroundings, others treat our streets like a resort rather than someone’s neighborhood.
This can mean louder gatherings, overflowing trash bins, and a general disregard for the community standards that make The Villages® so special. After all, vacationers are here to relax — not necessarily to live by the same rules we do year-round.
Then there’s the golf cart factor. Being a golf cart community adds an entirely new dynamic. For seasoned residents, it’s second nature to drive responsibly through the winding paths and bustling squares. For visitors, however, it’s an adventure — sometimes one taken a little too enthusiastically. Add in unfamiliar routes, a lack of local awareness, and a “vacation mindset,” and it can become a risky combination.
The growing popularity of short-term rentals raises important questions for our community: How do we balance homeowners’ rights to rent their properties with the need to preserve safety, peace, and neighborhood pride? Can we find a middle ground where both permanent residents and temporary guests can coexist comfortably?
Short-term rentals may bring a bit of extra income — but they also bring change. And as our neighborhoods evolve, perhaps it’s time we all pause to ask: Are we still building a community, or just hosting one?
