Alligators on the Move in The Villages: Stay Alert and Keep Your Distance

Living in The Villages means enjoying beautiful ponds, lakes, and waterways—but it also means sharing the community with Florida’s native wildlife, including alligators. From time to time, residents may spot an alligator wandering from one pond to another. While it can be an unusual sight, it is perfectly natural behavior.

Alligators move between ponds for a variety of reasons: they may be searching for food, looking for a mate, or simply relocating to find a better water source. They are more likely to be on the move during warmer months (spring and summer) and especially in the evening or early morning hours when they are most active.

If you see an alligator traveling across a golf course, roadway, or yard, keep your distance. Do not approach, feed, or try to scare it away. These animals are a vital part of Florida’s ecosystem but can be dangerous if provoked or crowded.

Residents are encouraged to stay mindful and give these creatures plenty of space. For safety, always keep pets leashed and children away from the water’s edge.
