Golf Carts vs. Cars: A Better Fit for The Villages Squares

Anyone who has visited the town squares in The Villages knows they’re meant to be lively places—filled with music, dancing, dining, and plenty of people crossing from one side to the other. But one thing tends to take up far too much space: cars.

A single car consumes an entire parking spot, while four golf carts can easily fit into that same space. Since golf carts are the preferred way of getting around The Villages, it makes sense to encourage more golf cart parking in and around the squares. This would not only maximize the limited space but also better reflect the way most residents travel.

It’s worth noting that ample parking already exists behind the squares for cars. Redirecting vehicles there would free the core areas for golf carts and pedestrians, making the squares safer and more enjoyable. Without cars weaving through crosswalks or pulling into tight spots near restaurants and shops, residents and visitors could walk between venues without worry.

The charm of The Villages lies in its people, its carts, and its lively squares—not in lines of parked cars. A shift toward golf cart–first parking would make these community centers both safer and more accessible. It is done during the farmers market, why not while entertainment is taking place.
