When many current residents of The Villages moved here, part of the charm was the ability to enjoy a night out that included dinner, live music, and a movie—without ever leaving their town square. Each square had its own theater, making it easy to catch the latest films just steps away from restaurants and shops. Now, with two of those theaters closed and no plans for their return, many Villagers feel an important part of the community experience is being taken away.
The Barnstorm Theater at Brownwood Paddock Square has remained dark since the COVID-19 shutdowns. Despite a petition signed by more than 3,500 residents urging its reopening, officials have said there are no plans to bring it back, citing nationwide declines in theater attendance and the rise of streaming services. For many locals, that explanation offers little comfort, as the building continues to sit unused in the heart of one of the busiest squares.
In Spanish Springs, the Rialto Theater—a long-time staple for moviegoers—is being converted into a gym and fitness center. While the addition of fitness amenities might serve some residents, others see it as another loss of the entertainment options that once made each square a complete, self-contained night out.
With only the Old Mill Playhouse in Lake Sumter Landing still operating—now run by Epic Theatres—residents say the sense of balance among the three squares has been disrupted. What was once a feature that made each square feel equally vibrant now feels uneven, and many are left asking: as The Villages continues to grow, will more of what made it special be taken away?
