If you’ve ever stared at a text from your grandkids and thought, “Did they just type the alphabet in random order?” — you’re not alone! Today’s younger generation has a whole language built on abbreviations, and knowing a few of the most common ones can make texting with them more fun (and less confusing). Here are some you’ll see most often:
- LOL – Laugh Out Loud (not “Lots of Love,” though it could be both when you text your grandkids!)
- BRB – Be Right Back
- OMG – Oh My Gosh (or goodness, depending on your preference)
- TTYL – Talk To You Later
- BTW – By The Way
- IDK – I Don’t Know
- SMH – Shaking My Head (used when something is silly or unbelievable)
- JK – Just Kidding
- FYI – For Your Information
- Thx – Thanks!
Why Learn Them?
Using these shortcuts is a playful way to connect with your grandkids in their own “language.” Send a “LOL” when they tell you a joke, or reply with “BRB” when you need to put the phone down to stir the soup. They’ll get a kick out of you joining in on their style of texting.
Try It Out!
Next time your grandchild sends you a message, try slipping in a “TTYL” or a “BTW.” You might even surprise them with how quickly you catch on. Before you know it, you’ll be texting like a pro — and maybe teaching them a few of your own “grandparent codes.”
After all, texting is supposed to be fun, and what better way to stay connected than speaking a little bit of their lingo?
