Life in Florida comes with unique wildlife, and The Villages is no exception. Alligators are a natural part of the environment and are often seen in and around ponds, lakes, and golf course waterways. While they may seem calm or even disinterested, residents and guests should always remain cautious. It’s important to remember that these are wild animals and should never be approached or fed.
Occasionally, alligators have been known to wander near homes, especially those close to water. Small pets are at particular risk, as they can be viewed as potential food sources. Residents should keep pets leashed and away from shorelines and never allow them to swim in ponds or lakes.
Alligator activity increases during mating season, which runs from April through June. During this time, males are more active and can be more aggressive as they establish territory and compete for mates. Extra caution is advised when walking near water or playing golf in areas close to ponds.
Awareness is the best form of protection. By respecting their habitat, supervising pets, and keeping a safe distance from all bodies of water, residents and guests can continue to enjoy the beauty of The Villages while coexisting safely with Florida’s native wildlife.
